    Calls to police the metaverse

    RoboCop — a cinematic cyborg solution to crime in Detroit — is now 37 years old … and finally Interpol has caught up.

    The international police agency published a report this month arguing that forces should establish a “virtual presence in the metaverse” to tackle the growing threat from online crimes.

    But whereas Robocop was real steel that packed a real punch, modern police forces are now worried about crimes committed by digital avatars.

    The term metaverse originated in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction novel, Snow Crash, and refers to an online 3D world in which individuals are depicted as digital icons that use virtual or augmented reality to interact.
